I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to hair care, but I have done lots of expirementing and Googling (lol) and I have found some cheap DIY tips and recipes that work for me:) If you're broke (like me lol) and can't afford fancy hair products, these are definitely worth a shot!
#Hair Washing:
Something really important when it comes to hair care is how often you are washing your hair. Ideally you should be washing your hair no more than two or three times a week and no less than once a week. The reason for this is because overwashing your hair causes damage and dryness as well as breakage due to the fact that wet hair is very fragile. Overwashing also strips your hair of its natural oils. On the other hand, if you don't know how to take care of you hair, not washing it very often can make your hair look greasy and oily. So how do you keep your hair from being greasy and disgusting when you reduce the amount of times you're washing it? ⬇
#Greasy Hair:
Dry shampoo is a life saver if you know how and when to use it. I have personally never tried store bought dry shampoo, but judging from reviews people tend to say it's not worth getting. I use cornstarch (to absorb grease) and some cocoa powder (for coloring) and it works really well! I section my hair and apply it with a large makeup brush on the roots. Usually I apply it the day before my hair starts to get greasy. So for example, I wash my hair on Saturdays and my hair starts to get oily around Wednesdays so I apply my dry shampoo on Tuesdays and every day after that until I wash my hair again.
#DIY Recipes:
Some thing I use when washing my hair is a moisturizing coconut oil hair mask. (once a month) This is just a mixture of softened coconut oil (not quite melted) and a little bit of honey. You can apply it all over you hair and let it sit for 15 minutes to an hour before washing. Something else I use to wash my hair is different kinds of tea. Many teas are loaded with nutrients that promote healthy hair growth. They also make your hair smell really good;) I typically use green, peppermint or black tea, but you can use just about anything!
#Soft Hair:
For soft hair, one of the easiest, most important things you can do is wash your hair with cold water, the colder the better. I literally cannot stress this enough; your hair will literally be so much shiner, softer, and less greasy. The coconut oil hair mask and tea I mentioned also help your hair be softer:)
#Damaged Hair:
Wet hair is super fragile, so to avoid ripping your hair out, be gentle. I'd recommend using a comb instead of a hair brush on wet hair. Something else you can do to prevent damaged hair is sleeping with your hair up, either in a messy bun or a braid depending on your hair type. If you have dead ends, be sure to get them trimmed to prevent the split ends traveling up your hair. Limit the use of heat to no more than once per week, and use hair masks to restore your hair.
So here's the takeaways all in one place:
#1: Don't overwash you hair
#2: Use dry shampoo for greasy hair
#3: Try different DIY mixtures and hair masks
#4: Wash your hair with cold water
#5: Comb wet hair instead of brushing it
#6. Don't sleep with your hair down
#7. Limit heat use
