While everyone's devo routines are different, I thought it might be helpful if I shared mine in case you are struggling to have a meaningful devo time. I hope it will be a help to you!!
1. When?
I usually like to do mine early in the morning. While you don't HAVE to do this in order to have a meaningful time with God, you might be surprised how helpful it is. Mornings are so good because they are quiet, and you can be alone with God before the craziness of your day starts. It's hard and it take discipline, but it is so worth it. Any relationship takes work, and your relationship with God is no different. Whatever time of day you choose, be consistent.
"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." -Mark 1:35
2. Where?
It's very important that you have a quiet place, free from any kind of distractions (ex. phone, computer, siblings, noise, pets, etc.) That said, find a comfy place where you can be alone with God. Maybe outside, on your porch, or in your bedroom. Where you do your devotions really doesn't matter; God is just as near to you at your desk or in you room as He is in a church. (Jeremiah 23:23)
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." -Psalm 91:1
3. What?
If you don't know quite where to start, I'd recommend getting a Bible study! I have a few recs here... If you want more, I have more since the time I wrote that post haha;) Feel free to message me if you want recs for a specific topic! I do have to throw in the book I'm going through now though haha. It is SO. GOOD. It's called "I.D. Who Am I in Christ?" and it's only $6! I'd highly recommend it!! If you'd rather study for yourself without a book, choose a book of the Bible, maybe one you haven't really gone through before, and look up commentaries, songs, sermons, etc. to help you!
"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." - James 4:8
4. How?
There are so many different ways to do your devos, but something that has helped me personally is lists of questions. The following list is really good for digging deep! If this list looks incredibly daunting to you, don't feel like you have to do them all in one day! No matter what questions you choose to ask yourself, it's important that you find a way to apply the passage to your life.
BOOK OVERVIEW QUESTIONS:
1. What is the historical setting?
2. Who's the author?
3. Who's the audience?
4. What's the general purpose of the book?
5. What are the themes?
READING QUESTIONS:
1. What is the main theme of the passage?
2. Where else in the Bible can that theme be found?
3. What are the keywords?
4. Who are the main characters?
5. Is there an example to follow?
6. What actions should we take?
7. Is there a promise to claim?
8. What is a meaningful verse to you?
Sometimes doing your devotions can feel like an absolute CHORE. We've all been there. I would encourage you to look at your devos as a privilege rather then just a box to check off the list. Also, there is literally nothing wrong with making your time with God enjoyable with little things like aesthetic notes, a cup of tea, pretty highlighters, or cozy blankets! Find out what works for you!
Flash Tips:
